Russia and China veto UN resolution with sanctions on Syria

UNITED NATIONS - Russia and China on Tuesday vetoed a UN resolution backed by Western powers that would have imposed sanctions on 21 Syrian individuals, organizations and companies allegedly involved in chemical weapons attacks in the civil war.
The resolution would have barred all countries from supplying the Syrian government with helicopters, which the researchers say were used in chemical attacks.

The resolution obtained a minimum of nine favorable votes. In addition to China and Russia, Bolivia voted against and three countries abstained: Egypt, Ethiopia and Kazakhstan.

A joint investigation by the United Nations and the global organization monitoring the use of chemical weapons determined that the Syrian government was involved in at least three attacks with chlorine gas, and the extremist Islamic State was responsible for at least one attack with spent mustard.
